Only in the last year have I started interacting with others in terms of tech. I would also say my frustrations with the current state or social media and my strong opinions have hardly helped my love of interaction online. I've operated in isolation as far as tech goes for so long that I thought it was the only way to do anything. I do pose a specific question at the very end if you're interested in answering this FNG. Hard to TLDR this one because it has a lot of emotional context. I 100% understand if you don't wanna read it.

I would like to know if I am doing a bad practice or are there drivers that I need to make sure to install first thing, or anything else to just not have to deal with problems that you wouldnt expect from native games. So my question is, am I doing something wrong? am I getting unlucky? or is linux gaming just this hit or miss still, even on "just werks" distros like manjaro.

Because of this, I'm considering trying out pop os just to see if I can solve these problems that I have no idea how to fix, even if it means losing my beloved aur :( This worked better than I expected, lots of the problems I encountered were now gone, but some stuff like steamvr games and other random desktop games that are even native to linux just break, like terraria for example (either runtime or native). Because of this, I switched to manjaro to try and alleviate some of the problems that could just be caused by being bleeding edge. I would think this would be pretty standard and trouble-free, but I would encounter lots of annoying bugs by just trying to use it as a computer, and on top of that many things like steamvr with an index just wouldn't work all the time. My order of operations would be to install the base os and stuff like networking (essentially everything from the tutorial) on liveusb, then an aur helper, then install desktop stuff like plasma or gnome, and a display manager like sddm, gdm, or ly, and finally steam and proton ge. I started out using arch as it was what I ran on my servers and it was what I was most familiar with, but even after several fresh installs I kept encountering tons of bugs with the cleanest installs I could.

I've recently switched to linux full time on my main machine for general computing after running it on home servers and trying to switch every now and then with no success. Is there something I need to do differently besides installing steam and my games on a fresh install? or is linux still super hit or miss for everything. TL DR I'm encountering tons of bugs on fairly standard modern amd hardware, even on just werks distros, even with native games. but HOW do we address this in the longterm? Surely the steamdeck will not be the Messiah to create a viable alternative to winspy on its own, and GOD help our hopes if the steam deck flops!ĭoes anyone have some perspective i have been missing? Because hard-/software is not supported user numbers stay smallĬurrently we have help from a giant company (valve) to push for new innovation and have felt investment. With small numbers, hard-/Software will not be supported. This has smacked me in the fac with the old paradox and biggest Problem for Linux being made "easy" for normal people: User Numbers.Īnd it really has me looking for a solution, but i cant find it.

Have i just been lucky all this time? Why did i not have all these Driver Problems when i bought my Radeon 6800? Why has my performance not broken down so hard like many Posts here suggest? The recent part, where Linux Mint Cinnamon Still has Window lagging issues which seemingly have been unsolved since 2013, really had me reeling. We all know how it is going at this moment. Surely, i thought, since my experience has been so smooth overall for the last few years, Linus would have a relatively easy time and Millions of people would see that, even though linux does require tinkering it isnt a dealbreaker and a day or two of work will basically make your machine fully usuable and a good experience. The recent "Linux Experiment" by Linus has once again depressed me. I wanted to start a small discussion and see where it goes, because i have been feeling a bit unenthusiastic regarding the future of my favorite OS.
